 Off to the races!

Dear Friend,

There are three major Ocean Races for sailboats and on Friday, June 19th, the Newport to Bermuda race begins.  My husband Rob will be doing this race for the third time.  However, this year he will not be doing the race on Sapphire Seas (our boat).  He will proudly be crewing on the Hiro Maru, captained by Hiro Nakajima, the commodore of the Stamford Yacht Club.  We wish Hiro and his crew fair winds and a speedy arrival in Bermuda!  I, on the other hand will happily be flying down to Bermuda with Noah and James and will greet everyone in port.

When it comes to racing, speed is key.  The faster you go the sooner you reach the finish line.  This is not so true when it comes to investing.  The old adage, "slow and steady wins the race" is the key to success in this arena.  Today's newsletter talks about dividend paying stocks.  Most people start to yawn when they hear this topic, but you can't beat the compounding effects of reinvested dividends over the years.  Want to know how to deal with tough markets?  Owning dividend paying stocks is a good way to get through it so please read on.

Go Hiro Maru!

Dividend Paying Stocks:  A Good Thing?

Catherine AveryWhen you hear the phrase 'dividend paying stocks,' what springs to mind?  Do you start panicking because you don't know exactly what it means?   Or maybe you just think....boooriing!   Well, 'dividend paying stocks' may initially sound confusing and boring, but actually are neither.  In financial terms they're a very good thing for YOU, the investor.

Dividend paying stocks are what their name suggests; a stock that pays you, a bonus, windfall or dividend.  Different types of investors use these types of stocks to fulfill different needs:

1.       Aggressive, growth oriented investors use them to 'hedge' their portfolio.
2.       Retirees use them to supplement existing income.
3.       Conservative investors use them to focus on maximizing long-term growth.

GET PAID TODAY

In our current bear market, wouldn't it be nice to know that the companies you own are giving money back to YOU, the shareholder?   This type of dividend payment is a great way to get paid now while waiting for your stocks, as a whole, to grow.

OR TOMORROW

Then again, simply reinvesting any dividends you gain can lead to exciting results.
In his article, "Dividends and the Three Dwarves," in 2003's Financial Analysts Journal, Robert Arnott looks at the components of equity returns for the 200 years preceding 2002.  His conclusion is that dividends are far and away the main source of the real returns from stocks.  In fact of the 7.9% return in stocks, 5% came from reinvested dividends, 1.4% from inflation, 0.6% from rising valuation levels and 0.8% from growth in dividends   Now there's some serious earnings!

And what about the evidence displayed in, "The Triumph of the Optimists: 101 Years of Global Investment Returns" by authors Elroy Dimson, Paul Marsh and Mike Staunton?   Examining contributions to total returns through capital gains and dividends over a 101-year period, they found that a stock portfolio with reinvested dividends would have generated nearly 85 times the wealth generated by the same type of portfolio focusing solely on capital gains!

Still think dividend-paying stocks are boooriing...?
